Liverpool have been dumped out of the EFL Cup at the quarterfinal stage following their 5-0 defeat to fellow Premier League outfit Aston Villa at the Villa Park.

Although, the Reds fielded their U23 team for the game due to their FIFA Club World Cup currently staging in Qatar.

The home team took the lead just 14 minutes into the game through a fine finish from Conor Hourihane.

Three minutes later Morgan Boyes gifted the hosts their second goal after scoring into his side's net in the 17th minute.

And in the extra minutes of the first half, Kodija completed his brace to hand the Reds four goals advantage heading into the dressing room.

Few minutes into the extra minutes of the second half, Wesley recorded his name on the scores sheet to help the newly-promoted Premier League side demolish the inexperienced Reds side.

Aston Villa are now through to the semifinal of the competition and they await the remaining three teams from the other last eight games scheduled for December 18.

Although Liverpool have been beaten in the Champions League, they remain atop of the Premier League table having avoided a single defeat in the EPL.

The Reds are hoping to win their first English topflight title to consolidate the UCL silverware they lifted at the end of the 2018-19 season.
